Calibration

Calibration will establish practical identity ranges using real pieces and contacts. It needs to account for resistor tolerance, ADC variation, manufacturing variation, and the resistance of the contact path.

Intended workflow

Begin by characterizing empty and near-short readings. For each known identity, record multiple stable readings across repeated insertions rather than treating many samples from one untouched placement as sufficient. Compare distributions across channels and physical pieces.

Reject overlapping or unreliable bands rather than forcing a classification. Record the reference resistor, ADC configuration, sensor family, and any conditions needed to interpret the measurements. The exact statistical method, sample count, and acceptance criteria remain TBD.

Storage and use

Calibration may be per hex, per channel, or shared with local correction; ownership and storage location have not been selected. Firmware memory limits and recovery after replacement must inform that choice. Calibration should be associated with the relevant resistor registry and software interpretation so stale data is not silently reused.

During normal play, readings outside valid bands remain unknown. Calibration should be an explicit activity, not an automatic reassignment of identity whenever a piece looks different.
